Why relaxation techniques?
Energy – why is that some days we can be so full of energy, bounding around from task to task with a big smile on our faces, yet some days we can barely struggle out of bed, let alone raise a smile or enthusiasm for tackling the most enjoyable of tasks.
Positive emotions give you energy – negative emotions deplete your energy store. So while you are excited, happy and mixing with people you love or who’s company you enjoy, you sparkle with vibrant energy. If you are feeling angry or disheartened, you feel tired, frustration ready to unleash on any unsuspecting passer-by and ultimately you will end up feeling totally burnt-out.
Using relaxation techniques is an excellent way to recharge your batteries, on both a physical and emotional levels. The aim is relax your physical body and quieten your mind, build up your mental and emotional energies and regain a wonderful quality of life.
Things which we have personally found helpful when recovering from illness are:
:: walking meditation (a regular pace, just allow your mind to roam freely)
:: light gardening
:: listening to guided visualisation CDs (we are happy to recommend a few)
:: taking a day off each week – so if you work all day on a computer, try to keep away from it one day a week!
:: journalling – making notes can be an eye-opener on what makes you feel stressed!
:: try to take regular breaks from work, for example a long weekend every two to three months rather than a two-week annual holiday
Practising relaxation techniques will help to improve your response to stress by:
:: slowing down your heart rate
:: slowing your breathing rate and reducing the need for oxygen
:: reducing muscle tension, increasing blood flow to major muscles
:: reducing physical symptoms of stress, such as back and stomach pains, headaches and high blood pressure
:: reducing your trigger emotional responses, such as anger and frustration
:: increasing your energy levels
:: improving concentration
:: increasing your ability and efficiency in handling problems
:: improving your sleep patterns
:: strengthening your immune system
Relaxation techniques help you to switch your focus and full attention on to something calming, increasing awareness of your body. It really does not matter which technique you choose, but to reap the full benefits of relaxation techniques you DO need to practice them regularly to help ease stress and anxiety and receive the full health benefits!
