Heal yourself in nature
Author: Callie
Do you find yourself feeling so much better when you are out in natural surroundings, such as in your garden or out walking in a local park? I know I certainly do – so I am delighted to share this great article by NaturalNews which shares just how nature can be a great healer for us all.

Do you suffer from a “nature deficiency?” If you’d like most people in modern society, you spend most of your 24 hours of the day indoors. You work under artificial fluorescent lights, you eat and sleep inside a house or apartment, you commute in the artificial environment of a car, bus or train. You rarely get outside and even when you do, it’s not real nature — it’s some artificial “planned” park with concrete sidewalks and maintained lawns.
I suspect you may have a nature deficiency. I know because I’ve been there. Probably much like you, I spent a lot of time outdoors as a child, but in my adult years, I found myself spending more and more hours indoors. It didn’t take long to realize that breathing re-circulated indoor air and having little or no time in nature wasn’t a good recipe for lifelong health.
Today, I’m a nature advocate. Time in nature is healing all by itself, and children are especially vulnerable to the negative effects of a nature deficiency. But few people in the field of conventional medicine embrace the idea that nature itself a healer, so the message of spending time in nature to improve your health doesn’t get much attention.
However, I believe that not spending enough time in nature promotes depression, obesity and even cancer. In fact, I believe that nature is so important to lasting health that I took up permanent residency in a country where I have spring-like weather year-round, just so that I can be outside in nature every single day of the year!
That’s not possible to do in most places, but wherever you are, more time in nature can help you heal. Here’s how:
How spending time in nature helps you heal
• Sunlight
Sunlight supports all life on our planet. Without sunlight, we would simply have no life on Earth. Your body is designed to be exposed to sensible levels of sunlight, and that’s why experiencing a reasonable amount of sunlight directly on your skin makes good sense for your health.
As you well know, sunlight also causes your skin to generate vitamin D — perhaps the most miraculous nutrient yet discovered in the modern world. Vitamin D prevents cancer, heart disease and diabetes. It boosts bone density and immune function, and it prevents infectious disease far better than vaccines could ever hope to.
To get more vitamin D, simply spend more time in nature!
• Natural sounds
The natural sounds of nature are, in and of themselves, healing therapy. Simply surrounding yourself with the sounds of real nature causes a scientifically-provable reduction in stress levels and blood pressure.
The most powerful healing sounds in nature seem to be those from water: Waterfalls, water running down a creek or stream, rain and thunderstorms, etc. You can mimic these sounds with “sound conditioning” devices that broadcast sound loops of natural sounds. They’re very effective machines, but still nothing equals the healing potential of real sounds experienced directly in the real world.
• Colors
The colors of nature are, scientifically speaking, different wavelengths of light striking your retina and being interpreted as colors by your brain.
These different wavelengths are, in essence, a form of energy medicine. Light is energy, and what your body needs to be healthy is exposure to a diverse assortment of those energy wavelengths. That’s why looking at all the various colors of flowers, plants and animals is, by itself, a healing experience. It also stimulates the brain to become more active and more intelligent.
Spending more time in nature allows your brain to explore a more diverse natural reality, causing it to function at a higher cognitive level. Dull people, in contrast, tend to spend a lot of time indoors where the scenery never changes.
• Movement
Being in nature makes physical movement almost mandatory. When you’re in nature, you’re often walking, running, biking or swimming. And yet because the scenery is so beautiful, it doesn’t feel like exercise! It simply feels like fun!
The health benefits of all this movement are tremendous: A boost in circulation, increased bone density and muscle strength, increased flexibility, lymph fluid circulation and much more. And yet being in nature allows you to experience all these benefits without it feeling like hard work.
• Air
There’s something qualitatively different about fresh air versus indoor air. Indoor air is contaminated with chemicals that have been off-gassed from all the synthetic materials used in the construction of homes and buildings: Carpets, furniture, paints, glues, dyes and so on. Plus, you often get mold spores from indoor air ducts.
The air in a living pine tree forest (or any forest) is refreshingly different! Some people attribute it to the “negative ions” in the air, but there’s much more to it than that. There’s something almost magical about fresh air in a natural environment — it’s “sweet” and energizing! The more time you can spend in nature, the more fresh air you can take into your lungs and enjoy as a healing experience.
It’s an innate thing to desire “fresh air.” Every person on the planet intuitively knows that fresh air is better than indoor air. Ever wonder why this knowledge is so deeply embedded in the human brain?
• Microbes
Western medicine believes that sterility is safety. They want people to live in a sterile environment, where all the microbes in your environment (or on your food) are killed by antimicrobial soaps and pharmaceutical drugs.
But certain microbes are very important for your health! Exposure to microbes in the real world is hugely important for the healthy balance and functioning of your immune system, and the best place to have exposure to these microbes is out in nature!
When I was a kid growing up, I played in the dirt. I swam in the pond. I camped out on the grass. Today, many parents would be horrified to allow their children to even touch dirt or swim in the “non-sanitized” water of a natural stream. This obsession with sterility is deeply misguided. Seek out nature and don’t be afraid to experience the real world even if it means getting your hands dirty.
• Bio energy
Beyond the light, the sounds, the air and all the other healing elements of nature, there’s also something less tangible: The bio energy of living systems. In some way that scientists still don’t understand, lush living ecosystems “recharge” the human body and mind. Spending time in nature rejuvenates your system, and when city life leaves you feeling depleted, nature can bring your energy back.
Part of the magic of the bio-energy in nature depends on coming into physical contact with nature. Walk barefoot. Hug a tree. Touch a flower. Lie down on the grass. Touch nature as your body intended and you’ll create a closed circuit with the planet itself. Some people say that being electrically “grounded” with the earth (through barefoot walking) makes an important difference in reducing the electric “noise” that interferes with your health. There’s merit to this thinking. Your ancient ancestors didn’t walk around in Nike shoes. They walked barefoot, and they were healthier for it!
Kids suffer from nature deficiency, too!
Most modern children live their lives indoors, banging away on gaming consoles and social networking websites. Few children are offered opportunities to spend any real time outdoors, in nature. The idea of “going to camp” during the summer seems to have been lost on the current generation of children, most of whom spend their summers in air-conditioned environments that are highly detrimental to their health.
One of the greatest gifts you can offer any child is time in nature. And the earlier you start teaching children about the joys of nature, the more success you’ll have in sharing outdoor experiences with them. Plus, introducing your children (or grandchildren) to more time in nature means that you get more time in nature, too.
One way to encourage time in nature, by the way, is to get rid of the TV. Television is the enemy of the natural world, and the more time children (or adults) spend in front of the TV, the less time they tend to spend in nature. Once children spend enough time in front of the TV, they won’t even want to venture into nature at all. Their whole “world” becomes the virtual world broadcast into their brains from the television set.
For teenage boys, time in nature has largely been replaced with time spent playing computer games and console games. While there’s nothing wrong with a little time spent gaming, when this act becomes the dominant focus of a child’s life, it is hugely destructive. What these children need is more time in the real world and a lot less time in virtual worlds.
Seriously: I’ve often thought that somebody should launch a “nature camp” business that would offer rehab services for teenage boys who are addicted to gaming. It would be a hugely successful business given how widespread modern gaming addiction has become.
In any case, whether you have kids or not, spending more time in nature will vastly improve your health! So make it a point to get outside, soak up some sunshine, breathe in the fresh air and get all the nature you can! You’ll be healthier, happier, more fit and even more intelligent for doing so!

Thought of the Day: Share joy and happiness
Author: Callie

“When we share joy and happiness, we give two of the most powerful healing medicines in the world” ~ Unknown
Pumpkin, sugar and spice scrub
Author: Callie
1/2 cup cooked or canned pumpkin, pureed
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1. Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl
2. Put yourself in a tub or shower (without clothes!) and use a damp flannel to scoop some of the mixture up. Apply to your body, starting with your feet and working your way up – but avoiding your face. Scrub gently using a circular motion.
3. Rinse the mixture off you with warm water and gently pat dry, using a delicious natural oil (such as sweet almond oil) to keep your skin smooth and soft, fully rehydrated.
PS Cinnamon has numerous health benefits if ingested, but just the aroma of cinnamon can help to boost your memory.

Callie says: great, I’ve still got some pumpkin left over … guess what I will be doing this evening?!!!
Feeling low in energy?
Author: Callie
We have been so blessed here in sunny London this past week, with the most gorgeous autumnal weather – warmth, sunshine and perfectly-blue skies. I have been taking the chance to work outside in the garden, surrounded by chattering squirrels and bees busy catching the last of the nectar from gorgeous colourful blooms. Taking a moment to admire the view, I have just noticed that the sky is adorned with wispy clouds masquerading as feathers … ahhhh, don’t you just love Mother Nature?
As with most people, recent planetary activity (please do check out Mandi Lockley’s brilliant articles on astrological influences) has caused chaos with communication at every level. Although usually very open with my thoughts and views, I have struggled to vocalise even something as simple as my day’s events with even my nearest and dearest … my broadband connection keeps slipping, my mobile phone is hiding voicemails … you name it, its happening! Energy levels are also at a dip ~ my clients are also feeling unusually weary, noticing strange reactions to foods and products they have been using for years, and other such phenomena.
Last Saturday dawned and although the early morning skies looked a little sorrowful, my beloved and I decided to pack up the car and head off to the New Forest – time to escape busy London, go gather some fresh air and blackberries at the same time! And so we did …
I will let you into a little secret of mine. The New Forest is one of my three favourite places in the UK (Boscastle, North Cornwall and beautiful London at sunset … she looks just magickal as you walk across Waterloo Bridge or Putney Bridge). Any lingering tension evaporated as we slowly walked through picturesque Brockenhurst village, soaking up the peace and tranquillity of our surroundings.
(By the way, if I ever win the National Lottery, you will find me living down there …!)
You swop the pollution for pungent horse manure in the New Forest: the aroma can be slightly overwhelming but this is always quickly forgotten as soon as you catch sight of the beautiful wild New Forest ponies grazing through the village, sharing land with the curly-cows (as I call them) who similarly roam wild and stop the traffic at regular intervals.
With the sun shining down with delicious warm rays, we took a breather from blackberry-picking and sat down. Soon we were surrounded by New Forest ponies, eager to find out what we had in our jute bag – yes, they could smell blackberries. At one stage I had to shimmy up the slight bank we had sat ourselves on, as one New Forest pony was determined to eat a patch of grass right underneath me! They were remarkably friendly, nuzzling up to us and curious to see what else we may hidden away on us that they could eat …
Happiness levels restored to a maximum 100 out of 100, we finished blackberry-picking – admittedly, I was more intent on taking photographs and cooing over the New Forest ponies so my beloved manfully continued to pluck plump berries from very thorny hedgerows. I realised why the locals plant their precious flowers in the middle of their gardens, rather than near the (high) fences surrounding their homes – the ponies are not shy of sticking their necks through any gap they can find, as they graze for alternative natural foodstuff.

We had skillfully ended up outside the Cloud Hotel, our favourite place for cream teas. A wonderful resting place, sitting in the lounge watching the New Forest ponies grazing – and nipping each other – on the moorland directly beyond their forecourt. A wander back through the main village street saw us besieged by donkeys who have unbelievably-soft coats, curious enough to try to eat our camera!
The happiness factor continued long after our return home that evening, as I made my first-ever batch of blackberry and apple jam with fantastic results on Sunday. Oh yes, and the usual blackberry pies.
So often we get caught up in our daily life and forget just how well Nature can soothe our mind, our spirit. We have no need to drive miles into the countryside, suffering long traffic queues – we can just bundle up in layers as autumn elegantly makes her debut, step out into our garden or find a public park where we can admire the beauty surrounding us, as Mother Nature transforms herself yet again. Look up to the sky and notice how peaceful the world above is. Be at one with nature … and breathe in the wonder of her, and let her healing balm soothe all that needs to be soothed in the melee of modern-day living. Discover your own way or harnessing Mother Nature’s gifts to rebalance and revitalise you each and every day.
Hard-up women abandon skin creams for ‘good value’ Botox
Author: Callie
So said the news headline on page 3 of the London Lite yesterday evening (19th August 2009). Intrigued by the headline, yet shivering at the idea of using Botox (a personal fear!), I couldn’t wait to read more …
“Women are ditching their favourite but expensive skincare products for longer-lasting cosmetics treatment. Sales of products such as La Prairie, Lancome and Estee Lauder have declined in the past few months as consumers turn to Botox injections and laser hair removal to save money long-term. Analysts Mintel said consumers were also turning to Botox not to waste time each day applying make-up … ‘We know that older women tend to be more cynical of claims made by beauty products. With Botox, they know it’s going to work so they go for the guaranteed results’.” (c) LondonLite
So what exactly is Botox? Botulinum Toxin (hence the term “Botox”) is also known as Wrinkle Relaxing Injections, which is a toxic protein used in tiny doses to stop muscle spasm. Botox is injected into specific muscles to relax them temporarily, leading to an inability to wrinkle the skin overlying the treated muscle – which is why some people say that Botox leads them to develop a “frozen” look, as the toxic protein latches on to the muscle only. For more about Botox, please visit Wikipedia.
Just the very idea of having something unnatural being injected into my skin gives me the heebeejeebees, reminiscent of school vaccination jabs where you would leave the sick bay howling in pain (or was that only me?!).
I had a quick scout around and discovered that in London, the best value for Botox is around £250 for a treatment which tackles three specific muscles (areas).
So for £250 you could get your forehead ‘worry’ lines treated alongside your laughter lines (naso-labial area) and crows feet (peri-orbital area). The Botox treatments are predicted to give results for a 3 – 4 month period, so you are looking at booking in for a minimum of 4 treatments per year at a cost of £1,000 – £1,250.
Does this offer good long-term value?
From my perspective, not really. Much as I look in the mirror at times and despair, I know that my animated face is really ME – you can see when I am happy, when I am sad. My facial lines show who I really am, they all have stories to tell … would people react to me differently, would they feel I was still a warm, friendly person if my eyebrows didn’t react with such abandon or if my smile didn’t reach my crow’s feet and turn them upwards too?
Despite my own personal concerns over the safely of using a toxic protein as a beauty treatment, I would always advocate natural over chemical because I believe that as we age (dis)gracefully – if we are lucky!- our faces reflect our inner beauty with true grace.
Facial rejuvenation (natural face lift massage) offers a natural alternative to Botox, without limiting you to being treated in specific muscle areas. Your whole face will receive minute, precise movements which help to relax, stimulate and re-educate your muscles to give a definite “lift” and a beautiful, radiant glow to your skin. Another plus point to this treatment is that you have an hour of bliss, time to yourself, time to relax and as we stimulate your energy points (meridien or marma points) you will feel deeply relaxed yet rejuvenated within your body too. Delighted clients verify time and time again just how amazing this treatment is, the beauty of it being that it is au naturelle and injection/electrical/product-free!
So, thinking about these hard-up women who are desperately trying to find ways to reduce their expenditure on fussy, exorbitantly-priced skincare and procedures …
Each Facial Rejuvenation treatment with Holistic Feathers is £40 for an hour-long treatment. The recommendation is for an initial set of 6 treatments over a 6-week period to re-train your muscles, and if you pay for the set of 6 treatments at the start, we gift you the 6th treatment for free (£200, instead of £240).
After the initial 6-week treatment plan, its advisable to return for monthly top-up treatments, which will help you to keep the uplifted look and inspire you to add in a few simple facial yoga exercises each day. (Yes, we all forget so easily about these exercises … we just like to remind you every now and again just how great the exercises can be for your mind, body and soul – as well as your cute face!).
So for a total of £600 per year, you can receive a unique and incredible whole-body workout and look naturally radiant with your full range of expressions intact.
What would YOU choose?
I am definitely up for saving £400 per year AND receive a total relaxation experience, needle- and chemical-free …

Help stop the destruction of Nuweiba and its coral reefs
Author: Callie
In 2004 my son and I visited the most beautiful place on this Earth – the abundance of coral and stunning array of fish was, quite simply, breathtaking. Despite my long-held fear of water, even I was so entranced by what lived just a few inches from the soft white sands that I took up snorkelling and spent almost 2 weeks floating face-down in the calm waters of Nuweiba.
Nuweiba is a small town reliant entirely upon its thriving tourism and port, with tribal bedouin having lived in this part of South Sinai for centuries.
I find it hard to believe that a government can be so blase in its destruction of natural habitats and heritage – as will happen if this power plant goes ahead. Please kindly read the petition and if you care about our world’s natural habitat that has evolved over millions of years, please add your voice to ours.
We managed to stop the mass-cull of pigs recently in Egypt – let’s see if we can do the same with this hideous power-plant idea.
Thank you so much for your time,
With bright blessings
Callie x

Strong Objection to the Nuweiba Power Plant Project in South Sinai planned by the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and to be financed by the European Investment Bank and the African Development Bank.
We kindly ask for to join us in combating a serious situation that is arising in Nuweiba!
We, and other investors, residents and workers in Nuweiba, have, over the past couple of days, just learned of the plans of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company to build a very large power plant, (750Mw gas powered turbines on a site of 105000 square metres – towering over 82 metres in height), in the middle of Nuweiba City, South Sinai, Egypt.
Financing is reportedly to be forthcoming from the European Investment Bank and the African Development Bank, (even though procedures of the banks and of the European Union for the granting of such financing have not been properly adhered to).
Furthermore, we were dismayed and shocked to hear that this project has been approved by the Egyptian Environment Affairs Agency.
Less than a week after receiving the EIA study, without proper study of the EIA report by ministry experts, the minister of environment approved the project due to strong pressure from the minister of Electricity complimentary.
If such a plant proceeds, it will have a disastrous effect on the local tourism industry, on the local Bedouin population and, above all, on the local environment.
Nuweiba is one of the most picturesque parts of the whole southern Sinai Peninsula, has an excellent and unique tourism potential, is home to two major Sinai Bedouin tribes, and has an almost unique, relatively undisturbed underwater marine life.
Apart from the obvious enormous detrimental effects such a project will have on the local environment and population during the construction period, once operational, the plant will have a negative impact on the quality of air, will reduce the level of sunlight, increase noise pollution and, above all, will damage seriously and irreparably the marine life and coral reefs that lie all along the east coast of Nuweiba adjacent to where the plant is planned to be built. The increase in water temperature will damage the aquatic life in Nuweiba in a number of ways, most prominently by causing a rapid reduction in the number of different fish species found here, causing the death of some and by forcing others to move to distant stretches of reef, but also by inducing coral bleaching and rapidly increasing the amount of algae in the water. This effect will initially be localised to the reefs in the immediate vicinity of the plant, but will, over time, extend to destroy more and more of the reefs in Nuweiba and further afield.
Such a large power plant will also cause the eventual demise of the local tourist industry and subsequently force the closure of the hotels, dive centres and other tourist service providers in the area, resulting in the loss of jobs for the many workers within the tourism industry and the loss of livelihood for the various local businesses that supply products and services to the tourism industry in Nuweiba. Tourism is a major source of income for the local Bedouin tribes so the effects on the loss of this industry are simply unimaginable.
We kindly and respectfully ask your assistance in putting pressure on the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, the South Sinai Governorate, the European Investment Bank, the African Development Bank and the Egyptian Environment Affairs Agency immediately to withhold approvals for this project pending full investigations, in co-ordination with internationally recognised environmental protection agencies, as well as to hold full disclosure meetings and consultation with local residents, businesses and NGOs as this has apparently not be done. The proposers of this project did place an advertisement in Al Ahram Newspaper, (a single, 1/8th page, insertion on the 8th April 2009 with very brief details on the project and with the instructions that any interested parties should visit certain offices either in Cairo, 470 km away, or Ismaileya, 400 km distant, or attend a meeting on the 15th April 2009 in Sharm el Sheikh, 160 km), but made no other serious attempts to advise, consult or inform the local community.
If you love and wish to preserve the beauty of Nuweiba, we suggest that you sign this petition and file your complaints to the following email addresses:
Prime Minister%u2019s Office, Arab Republic of Egypt primemin@idsc.gov.eg

I can’t hear you
Author: Callie
Oh boy – another ear issue, the bane of my life. I have suffered with ear issues since a tiny babe. I can vividly recall being in St Mary’s Hospital, Eastbourne (a scary place if ever there was one!) at the age of 2, screaming for my beloved Nanna not to leave me while they kept me in after emergency grommet surgery in both ears.
Since returning from Egypt in 2004 the ear issues have stepped up a notch … I blamed it on the snorkelling way back then, as we’d spent the whole two weeks submerged in the beautiful calm Aqaba waters of the Red Sea.
2am this morning saw me up and about – the pain so bad in my right ear that laying down was causing real pressure issues. We have not been snorkelling for over two years now so what on earth could be the issue?
Thinking back to my anatomy & physiology training, the left brain is wired up to the right side of our body; the right brain is wired up to the left.
Left brain functions are said to be “mental” (also relating to paternal):
~ uses logic, detail-oriented, facts rule, words and language, present and past, math and science, knowing, acknowledging, order/pattern, perception, reality-based, strategic, practical, safe
Right brain functions are said to be “emotional” (also relating to maternal):
~ uses feeling, “big picture” oriented, imagination rules, symbols and images, present and future, philosophy & religion, believes, appreciates, spatial perception, impetuous, risk-taking
Bearing in mind the left brain-right body idea, I checked out Louise L. Hay’s book “Heal Your Life” (always handy for clients) and surprise, surprise: Ear problems can suggest there is something that the person does not want to hear, including suppressed anger from occurrences in childhood.
That rings true : what do I not want to listen to? What am I not hearing? Time for reflection and meditation (after a visit to my GP, of course, to remind her I still exist!) …
Louise Hay gives a positive affirmation for each correlation between the physical and possible emotional causes of illnesses in her book, so for ears she says:
“Represent the capacity to hear.”
Affirmation: I hear with love (ahhh, that’s nice!)
For earache:
“Anger. Not wanting to hear. Too much turmoil. Parents arguing.”
Affirmation: Harmony surrounds me. I listen with love to the pleasant and the good. I am a center for love.
Although the anger aspect does not resonate with me, inner turmoil has presented itself over recent times as I find myself torn between two businesses … maybe I should listen to loving family and friends for once, do what I always recommend my clients to do.
Rest ~ stop putting yourself under so much pressure! Take time to just “be” …
I especially love the second affirmation so today I will put that to good use while I wait for an emergency appointment to see my GP (and use my own natural remedies to keep the pain at bay!).
Wishing you all a beautiful Monday filled with magnificent abundance x x
