Where Can I Recycle … My Bra?

Originally posted 21 January 2010

BreastTalk.co.uk's Bra Appeal is celebrating it's FIFTH BIRTHDAY this year (2011) ~ many congratulations!

If you have bras that you don’t wear any more, you can donate them to their appeal, who then distribute them to various charities, and any useable bras that are donated will go to help homeless and under privileged women in the UK and overseas.

They can also make use of any damaged bras that you have. These are recycled into quilts which are donated to homeless charities and are also used by the emergency services to keep victims, or people suffering shock, warm.

So total recycling!

They can use nearly all types of bra:
•All Sizes, even US or European

•All styles of bras but not too sexy
•All clasps and straps must be in working order unless sending worn/torn bras

•All types of bra, maternity, nursing, sports etc

They ask that you please wash all bras before you post them and that you attach a small piece of paper to each bra stating the size. Use a paper clip to fix it to one of the straps.

If you are sending new bras please let them know they are new.

All worn or torn bras can be sent in, but need to be marked on the label in pen for sorting purposes.

Your donated bras should be sent to:
BreastTalk.co.uk — Bra Appeal
, P.O. Box 71
, Craven Arms,
SY7 0WZ,
ENGLAND

With many thanks to my friend of Tranquillity Therapies for drawing this to my attention.

Fruity home-made mask for dehydrated skin

Originally published 29th September 2008

Another great recipe to use up any over-ripe fruit from the fruit bowl …

Ingredients:

1 cup of mixed fruit (try melon, peaches, strawberries or bananas)

2-3 tbsp. double cream

3 tsp. cottage cheese

1 tsp. brown sugar

4 tsp. oatmeal powder

Clean and dry your fruit selection, mash up finely with a fork and blend all the ingredients together.  All that is needed is to apply on your face – relax for ten minutes and rinse off with warm water.

The luscious combination of cream and juicy fruits work in combination to refresh and soothe your skin.

(No idea what it tastes like as I’m not a fan of cottage cheese (!) but I guess you could eat any leftovers!!!)

Bacteria in yukky make-up bags

~ originally posted 26th February 2010

Women warned of make-up bacteria risk as the average cosmetics bag is found to be four years out of date

Daily Mail – 25th February 2010

They might appear innocent components of the female armoury.

But beware. Those trusty pots of eyeshadow and tubes of lipstick can be dangerous.

Beauty products, like food, do not last forever.

Over time bacteria can infiltrate them, only to be transferred on to the face and cause irritation or even infection.  But the average make-up bag is a hoarding space for items that are four years out of date, a study shows.  And some women hang on to items for up to 15 years past recommended use-by dates.

Old mascara wands can breed bacteria that lead to conjunctivitis, which causes redness, itching and swelling.  They should not be used six months after opening – but women admit to keeping them for an average of a year.  Expired lipsticks, meanwhile, can make lips dry, irritated and blistered. And dirty brushes are a breeding ground for micro-organisms that can cause herpes, ringworm and impetigo, an infectious disease that results in blisters.

Five years ago rules were brought in by the European Union requiring all cosmetics to carry advice on when they will expire.

Many manufacturers responded by adding ‘period after opening’ symbols to packaging to indicate how many months a product lasts.

Callie says: “I have been puritanical about my make-up bag – and brushes – since qualifying as a therapist … how about you?  How often do you wash your make-up brushes, or give your make-up bag a good clear out?”
